Sound Meditation Healing

One of my favourite clients recently gifted me with an experience that opened my senses and transported me to realm I haven’t yet experienced. A sound healing workshop in the mountains, just a day, I lay deep in the bliss of breath and colour, with closed eyes I laid stretching and releasing, allowing my body to flow heavily, with guidance, letting go of stress and strain. A ‘sound healing’ workshop that would transform the way I heard…literarily everything. Perhaps you’ve already been introduced to sound healing before. Of course with many years working as a massage therapist I’ve listened to many types of tranquil sounds, spa relaxation, melodic healing tracks and beautiful piano concertos that have supported my massage therapy sessions to the next level. But this…this was something different.

Since then I’ve driven myself to explore sound and how I an incorporate my love for these healing tones in my practice as a therapeutic massage therapist. I don’t use sound meditation and healing in every session but only when my instincts guide me to. Of course, if you don’t wish to have sound healing in your sessions, that’s certainly ok. I always discuss this with my clients in advance.

  • Sound healing can alter brain waves from an active state to a more relaxed, dreamlike state. This can help the body relax and reduce stress hormones.
  • Sound healing can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the opposite of the stress response. This can slow down breathing, heart rate, and brainwaves.
  • Sound vibrations can stimulate tissues and cells to improve blood circulation and metabolism. They can also trigger the body’s regeneration and repair mechanisms.
  • Sound healing can stimulate the vagus nerve, which can help activate the body’s relaxation response.
  • Sound healing instruments are tuned to different body parts, chakras, and emotions. This can synchronise the instruments with the body in a rhythmic phenomenon called entrainment.

Some potential benefits of sound healing include:

  • Reduced stress
  • Improved sleep
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduced pain
  • Reduced anxiety
  • Lower cholesterol levels
  • Fewer mood swings
  • More balanced hormones
  • Greater sense of overall wellbeing
